Heart Smart

We are a HeartSmart School! HeartSmart is a creative approach that we use to build character, emotional health and resilience in children. Equipping children with foundational principles and skills that will improve their mental health and relationships and academic achievement, at Hucknall National, we want everyone to know that they are loved, cared for and valued.  We recognise the value of educating the heart alongside educating the mind. We use HeartSmart to do just that!

Information for parents about Heart Smart

This film is a quick introduction to parents, introducing them to the HeartSmart PSHE curriculum.

Here are some fun phrases that are part of the HeartSmart program and we are sure you'll start hearing them in your home as well. They're called the HeartSmart High Five and here's a brief overview:

RSE

The Department for Education has made changes to relationships and sex education following nationwide consultation which came into effect from September 2020 and all schools are required to comply with the updated requirements. The statutory guidance on this can be found  here.

The guidance focuses on healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. It also covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and healthy relationships.

Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up will give children and young people the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships and help them take responsibility for their own well-being.

Consequently, from September 2020, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), along with Health Education, will be statutory, and form part of the National Curriculum.

We have reviewed our RSE curriculum and policy so we can be sure our provision is appropriate for our pupils based on their:

  • Age
  • Physical and emotional maturity
  • Religious and cultural backgrounds
  • Special educational needs and disabilities

The right to withdraw children from some lessons is explained in our RSE policy below.

To help you understand the curriculum requirements, please look at the information below which provides more detail.
